Boris Gutnikov (born 1931-1986) represents the famous St Petersburg violin school and is well known both in Russia and abroad. As a young performer he has won first prizes at such prestigious events as Slavik and Ondficek competition (Prague, 1956), Long and Thibaud competition (Paris, 1957) and Tchaikovsky competition (Moscow, 1962).
The artist has performed extensively in Russia and dozens of foreign countries. His performing style has evolved from impulsive self expression to the wisdom of polished harmonic simplicity. However he has completely retained his ability to excite the audience even when performing the most
'cerebral' music.
Gutnikov's violin has an enchantingly beautiful tone and for this reason he often avoids excessively sophisticated phrasing. The 'voice' of his violin is
faultless and is equally expressive in virtuoso pieces and in the cantilena. His performance is distinguished by delicate nuances of sound and a great variety of colour.
In his interpretation of Bach and Mozart concertos on this CD Boris Gutnikov revives the best traditions of high classicism - emphasizes the well thought out performing concept, naturalness and clarity of phrasing, a balance of the expressive and the logical.
